Hi everyone!
I've got Win XP Home, bought in US with Compaq notebook few months
ago. It came already with SP2, and I update it regularly.
The problem is: after using Windows from my administrator account, when
I log off and try to log in using other account (limited one) Windows
proceeds with the login however at some point it stops and nothing
happens - I can only see Compaq background image, no icons, hard drive
led flashes from time to time, but Windows does not respond to
ctr+alt+del or simply does nothing. The only thing I can do is to power
off and power on. After that I can log in using that limited account
(but it looks that in needs to be first log in after power on), log off,
log in to administrator account.
So it is very annoying to power off computer everytime if somebody who
has limited account is willing to use computer, after me.
Please help! I found nothing on that subject in MS Knowledge Base -
maybe I was using wrong keywords, so any help really appreciated!

Regards,
Michal.

Any chance you have a corrupted profile for the limited account? If it's not
too much bother, why not create a second limited acct, and see if the
behavior repeats itself?

I've just check that: on a other limited account which wasn't used for a
long time - the same stuff. And on a newly created another one few
seconds ago - also the same stuff. Exactly the same.

Hi Michal,

In many cases, this has to do what is listed under: Shell. It should read:
explorer.exe
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Added info:

A User Logon Request Is Rejected Without Any Messages
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322

If the above is not the case:

This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set
to
"wsupdater.exe," and not "userinit.exe,".

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or:

Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe
to wsaupdater.exe

I've checked that - it is explorer.exe.

They say "...restricted user with no password attempts to log on..." -
my restricted users have passwords. So I guessing, that this does not
apply to me.

As I said before: after Windows restart those users can log in without
any problems. They just cannot log in, if the administrator was using
computer.
If the above is not the case:

Or:

Do I need to do those two last steps, if everything with the registry
seems to be ok?

Kelly, thanks for help.

The problem with freezing Windows during logging in the user on limited
account is now solved.

Along with that problem I had another one: ZoneAlarm wasn't starting on
limited account, because there was some kind of validation error.

When I've turned on again Cryptographic Services the problem with
ZoneAlarm was solved, as well as with computer freezing during logging
in from limited account.

Thanks again to everbody the help and support.
Regards,
Michal.
