Regaurdless of the antivirus software recommended to us by a well known
computer shop, the host computer on my home network developed a virus, I
think it was called PSGuard and another, Trojan.Proxy which then opened my
gateway/path to THIRTEEN others. Antivirus failed to pick this up, therefore
the damage already done. In result of this, I cannot run or open any
programme on the host PC. The network its self is about the only thing still
working. System restore failed and I dont have an XP Disc as it was installed
professionally when we upgraded.
My questions to you are:
Would a crash and burn be the soloution?
If so HOW do I do so? I have an ME Disc but not XP
Can I go back to my ME System programme on there before XP?
What about a new hardrive? How would I restore my drivers? Would this be
plug and play?
I would be greatful with anyones comments to what they believe is the best
soloution! Many thanks!

Anti-virus programs do not generally pick up on spyware/malware..
anti-spyware programs do however.. examples of anti-spyware, SpyBot S&D,
AdawareSE, SpywareBlaster..

There is a list of procedures that can be carried out to clean a computer of
all bad things, but the user has to be persistent and even then, there is no
guarantee that it will all come good.. much depends on just how bad the
system has become and the 'technical' level of the user, so although it
pains me to say it, there are instances where 'crash and burn' is the only
viable option.. if you want more on how to try to recover without
re-formatting, I can supply you with a list of things to do..

Re. the 'professional' upgrade, you should have been left with some way to
recover your XP installation.. I would suggest that you return to the
'professional' and ask him/her how you do so..one of you is going to need a
proper XP installation CD with a valid key code..

In order to return to ME, you will be obliged to do a clean install with
your ME CD.. if the drive was converted to NTFS after XP was installed, you
will first need to remove the NTFS partition using the FDISK function on a
Win 98 boot diskette..

If you can put your hand on your heart and swear that you
kept your virus definitions up to date, you did not switch
it off, especially to install software from the internet,
and you did not forget to switch it on again, and you have
up to date spyware removal programs and up to date spyware
definitions, and you've not opened any emails from unknown
sources, and you've never clicked on one of those "Your
computer is infected" or "Your computer is running slow"
pop-ups then you have indeed been let down by your virus
software.

Cheers,

Cliff

Dear Cliff
Unfortunatly, I can indeed put my hand on my heart and say YES I DID keep my
definitions up to date and my software up to date. I NEVER switched it off, I
dont download ANY software from the internet (other than spybot and adware),
I had SPYBOT, and ADWARE which were also kept up to date and I NEVER open
Emails from unknown senders. I have NEVER clicked those links as I know they
are FAKE as anyone would be daft to believe a pop up from something unrelated
to any installed software.
So yes, indeed you are right, I have been incredibly let down by the heap of
junk supposedly classes as Antivirus software!
