I wonder if someone can help me I upgraded from windows2000 to windows xp,
and installed several program, one day I noticed that the comp is
unbelievable slow, like clicking a folder to reveal the contents takes 10
secs + it's a 256MB ram with 30+ gig hard disk space, the comp had no
problems b4 with win 2000, and I don't know what ram hugger I have
installed, doing alt contrl and delete to show the memory and porocesses,
reveals everything as normal but the comp is very very slow compared to b4
my win98 64mb ram has never given me this amount of probs even with a ton of
stuff installed, do I have a virus or trojan, is there an offline virus scan
prog I can install to check the com, it is not connected to the net

thanks,.

I too am experiencing the same problem. I have scanned
everything using the latest virus database, I've scanned
looking for spyware etc and found nothing. I've disabled
every service and program that I think is not necessary
and tried following numerous guides dotted about the
internet. I've turned off all the fancy themes and menu
animation etc, but still I have the problem.

One area I thought might be a problem is my RAID
controller. It's integrated on to the motherboard and uses
the HPT374 chipset. I'm not using a RAID array, but all my
hard drives (3 off) are connected to it.

If some one can shed light on this behaviour I'd be
eternally grateful. I'm considering changing to Windows
2000.

Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

Please read my reply to the original poster. I have
alreadt tried **everything** you are suggesting. Simply
answering "run an updated virus scan" is not very helpful,
especially when the poster has stated that this has
already been done.

The OP never said a virus scan was accomplished.
What the OP did say "do I have a virus or trojan, is there an offline
virus scan prog I can install to check the com"
This actually suggests an AV application is not installed.
Every computer needs an up to date AV application.

I said much more than "Simply answering "run an updated virus scan..."
"

Reinstall latest Windows XP drivers.

I apologise for the misunderstanding, I thought you were
replying to my comments.

However, as I stated in my reply I have followed
everything that has been suggested and I still have not
been able to solve the problem. I would also note that if
he is not connected to the 'net then the problem is
unlikely to be a virus or trojan.

There is no need for you to be a smart ass

I'm not being a smart ass, if I was I'd have solved the
problem for myself. I was merely observing that in many
replies to pleas for help, the stock answer seems to
be 'run a virus check'. Most semi computer-literate people
will have already done that and are looking for other less
obvious options that the 'experts' might be able to
suggest.

I recently upgraded from Me to XP and am also haveing a
sluggish "XPerience". Two things I've noticed. The
activity light on my modem is constantly on AND my hard
drive seems to be seeking data more than ever. I too
have ran an up-to-date virus scan but found nothing. I
use Zone Alarm (free version) and every program that's
accessing the internet appears to be legit. I NEED HELP
TO!

It could be several things. XP needs more memory than ME. I think 256 m is
minimum, 512 is all you need unless doing extensive graphics. Also do a disk
cleanup and defrag. How much hard drive space do you have left? This could
also be a problem. If all that is OK, then I would backup data and do a
format and clean install.
