Very slow system

Simon Woods

Hi

[Using Win2K SP4, running on Dell Dimension 4100 P4 850MHz (approx) with
320mb ram]

I'm finding that every few minutes when using my system, I'm getting a 10-20
sec delay, across all my applications. I'm standalone.

Where should I start looking to get rid of this. My disks don't need
defragging

[Sorry if it's such a broad question]

Thanks

Simon

try temporarily disabling your antivirus software

and/or

try running some malware detection program over your system
such as Spybot

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

also take a look in the Event Viewer to see if any issues are being
reported

Defragging rarely has any noticeable effect. A 10-20 sec delay is
certainly unlikely to be fragmented disk. Has this always been a
problem and when did it start?

Have you checked your machine for spyware, trojans and viruses?

Cheers,

Yep ... I've adaware, spybot and avg as protection. Indexing is on for some
of my disks, but I'm beginning to wonder whether the regularity of the
freeze implies a homecall. I'm using DAP, MS autoupdates and Real as well.
I don't know what else of what I'm using may make homecalls

It's difficult to remember when it started. I thought that my system was
'just running a bit slow' and had tended to ignore it.

Thanks for the advice ... I'll post if I bottom it

You might also try running 'Process Explorer' from Sysinternals.com to find *what* the processes are doing?

And also check File Explorer from them too, to see if a file is being accessed (or trying to be accessed and not found).

Always try the MS KB first before posting.
MS KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO
And the answer could have already been posted, so try searching this and other newsgroups first.
