System requirements for upgrade to Windows XP Home edition

My 7 year old Dell Dimension 4100 has a 866mhz processor , 256 MB RAM,
and a 40 GB hard drive. OK according to Microsoft, but at least one post
stated I REALLY need 512 MB RAM and a 1 GB Mhz processor.
Will the new system be slow as molasses on my old rig?

Without any upgrades it will be slow, your better off sticking with XP.

I should have stated in the body- I am considering upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition-
Will my system be able to handle Windows XP?

At the very least I would bump the ram up to 512, XP would run fairly well
on your specs with the memory upgrade.
