very slow processing speed

I have an AMD Athlon Processor. 1.2 mHZ. 256 Meg Ram. Recently, my
processing speed has slowed WAY down. I get to the windows user name screen
ok, but my icons do not appear for several hours. Do I have a virus, or
another problem? I installed Norton and did a scan, w/o any virus.
