Very slow connect speed on dialup network

Shortly after installing an automatice update on my new XP
running computer about 4 weeks ago, I began to experience
very slow connect speeds (never above 32k on a 50k
modem). Bytes received is way slower (probably 4-8k)with
frequent pauses of 5-10 seconds and occasional pauses of
up to a minute. I hooked up my old Win98 computer to the
same ISP on the same phone line and get normal download
speed. Could this be the result of the update
installation? The computer is useless now for internet
use. Can anything be done?

Remove the update and see if your speed increases.
Hotfix Q811493 is known to slow your system down but I
believe it slows your whole system not just the Internet.
Also www.pcpitstop.com can do a on line analysis of
your system as well as your Internet settings they have
many auto fixes for problems found. This site is
sponsored by comp usa so I would trust it
Good Luck.

Make a new DUN to your ISP is the first thing to try - if you know your
settings - user account name - password - email address etc.

Check that your modem maximum bits per second setting hasn't, for some
strange reason been reduced. The default setting is usually 115,000 bps.
( Start | Settings | Right-click "Network Settings" and left click "Open" |
right click your DUN icon and left-click "Properties" | left-click the
"Configure" button and the max. bps setting is there. )

Not forgetting that you metnioned your trouble started after Windows
update - always wise to Double check that you haven't got lots of background
noise on your 'phone line - lift the receiver, press a number to get rid of
the dial tone and listen carefully for backround buzzes, hums, clicks and
rustling noises that indidcate moisture in a joint box somewhere.

Seeing as it was only one update, system restore to a point just before the
update - you did create a system restore point b4 updating didn't you ? !
Of course you have to think carefully about what data and program
installations you could possibly lose, and worse, if things get worse. And
of course create a restore point immediately in case you need to get back to
your current position.

The problem with Q811493 were fixed almost 6 months ago. If you installed
Q811493 after May 28th 2003, this update is most likely not the cause of the
slowdown.
