Very slow boot with AMD processor and USB 2.0 card

Using new motherboard with AMD 1800+ processor. XP will
boot normally with ADAPTEC USB 2.0 PCI card removed.
When card is installed, system boots to desktop, but
hangs for about 50 seconds before processes become
available. NTBTLOG.TXT shows many failed attempts to
load drivers after MUP.SYS is loaded.

If it is a new motherboard - does it have USB 2.0 channels ?
If so, you have at least 4 & perhaps 6 USB channels from the
motherboard. For additional channels, I would use a Adaptec
Hub and not an internal PCI USB card. Using both internal MB
and PCI USB creates multiple USB controllers & hubs that
may conflict and cause the boot-up problems you describe.

To R. McCarty: Thanks. I was thinking of using external
hub anyway. I do have headers for additional USB jacks
on the motherboard, but when I attach a newer printer to
the existing (2) USB jacks already provided on the mobo
back panel, I get a message in the system tray regarding
using a high-speed USB device in a slow USB port. I've
installed XP SP1, so I thought USB 2.0 drivers would be
there. Maybe I should save myself the headache and just
go with the hub! Thanks again.
