something happent to my internet and now the situation is:
still working : IE, direct downloads, kazza
not working : other browsers, IMs (yahoo, msn), download managers, etc
it looks like it might be some permission problem, but i dont have a clue.
any advice, guys?
First incling is spyware, noticing kazaa being among there. Unsure what
direct downloads is, havent heard of it, so I'm assuming it is potentially
harmful.
Try to download Ad-Aware, and get the newest update for the reference list.
Run it, you probably have several hundred things that will come up.
Quarantine them for now, and then reboot.
So long as you aren't using any firewall, and have full priveleges, and
aren't using proxy servers or ICS (routers are good, though), then it isn't
any priveleges thing. Why other browsers wouldn't work if it were any of
the problems listed previously in this paragraph is beyond me, so I would be
leaning towards spyware/adware/malware (all handled by ad-aware).
Caution, though, I've used Ad-Aware to remove certain things and then the
entire Internet was unaccessible. That's why you Quarantine things, so you
can restore it and then it's like it was. Then you can use the Internet to
see how you're supposed to handle the certain things you have which are more
difficult. There was a particularly nasty little one I had before that
embedded itself into the TCP/IP Socket Layer. It was quite frustrating to
remove. Often times the Internet didn't work with it and didn't work
without it, and when it did it wasn't for very long. When it dropped the
Internet when you were using it, it would bring up pop-up ads and send your
typed addresses to you non-default search engine. Alas, it was removed, and
has yet to resurface. Hopefully the one you have isn't as vicious, and
hopefully it is what you have and the problem should be resolved.
Double Caution .:. KAZAA is known to have spyware (Kazaa-Lite doesn't,
however it was struck down by Sharman Networks [Kazaa], so it isn't as easy
to find), and actually needs it to run. Removing certain spyware may render
Kazaa useless (which the RIAA has succedeed in doing already). Please ditch
Kazaa, it's crap, there are plenty of other better programs to which you can
obtain your warez.
