Very high CPU usage

T

Tom F.

My CPU percentage was maxed out by 2 processes related to
running Windows AntiSpyware at log-on. The processes are
gcasServ.exe [70% cpu usage] and lsass.exe[29% CPU usage].
This was unreasonable and heated things up rapidly. Upon
closing and restarting, the CPU usage was back to normal.
What's up with that?

A

Andre Da Costa

Yes, there is a known issue with AntiSpyware using high CPU usage,
especially up on launching or scanning. Should be solved by beta.

What build?

The newer build--.509, made available on February 16th at the download
center, has some performance improvements.

I've seen the issue you are reporting myself. As I recall, the UI mentioned
updating or reading definition files at the time this high CPU usage was
occurring.

My version is 1.0.501. Updating says I have the latest software. If you
want the latest build do you have to uninstall and download again?

In the case of this beta refresh, yes--you must download again.

You don't need to uninstall, for nearly everyone, it does an upgrade, but it
requires a reboot to get everything right.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

The download comes with 5687 definitions. I'm uncertain whether newer defs
in place are overwritten--I think not, but haven't checked. In any case,
5691 are the current definition level, so do a check for updates after
installing.

That has happend to me aslo, though mine has been running
fine for weeks and only started hogging CPU yesterday, it
will use what ever is available, taking the system to 100%
and everything else stops.

I notice they still haven't fixed the "flying window" problem. I kind of
figured that would have been high on the priority list. Of course that only
effects those of us who prefer to have our taskbars on the side.

Well the upgrade completed OK. Thanks.

Something I do not understand. If Internet Explorer is set to Work
Offline when you try to Update it says it cannot connect. Change to Work
Online and it connects. If Internet Explorer is closed it also will not
connect. I thought it was normal for software to say something to the
effect "Do you wish to connect?"! Why is MSAS set to respond negatively?

They've done little with the UI. I suspect that work is being reserved for
a more significant update which we'll see later--when you include
accessability in the mix, there is a lot to do in that area.

B

Bill Sanderson

I think this may be a bug. It takes its cue for proxy settings from the IE
settings, but it certainly shouldn't require that IE be open to connect--I
hadn't observed that issue--of course, I mostly have such a window open, but
not always. This is another set of details I expect to change with some
further beta rev. There are some areas that I think reflect developers less
familiar with the mechanisms involved than one would expect from
Microsoft--the date/time handling functions, and this area--relating to the
reporting and update network functioning--and I believe these will be
brought up to standard in a future release. I see these issues as relating
to the speedy provision of a beta product based on a third-party existing
product, only three weeks after the acquisition of that product.

Another MVP spotted it and sent me an email. And Ellen posted in the
