Very Basic VPN Question

I am running XP sp2 and am connected to the internet through a local network
and a cable modem. I work remote from our main office and I can access the
file server at our main office through a VPN. When I am connected to the
file server through the VPN does all of my internet traffic now go through
the VPN? I know that when I connect through the VPM my Instant Messenger
signs off and signs on again and the response time on the internet slows. If
it does all go through the VPN is there a way to prevent it from doing so?

It depends on the VPN server configuration. To find it out, use tracert or route print command lines. if you use Windows VPN, you may want to uncheck the "use default gateway on remote network". these search results may help.
