is it safe for me to assume that the boxed retail version of winxp pro
(upgrade) i'm about to buy is the "gold" version -- completely unpatched and
service packed? in other words, should i begin downloading now? ~;-)

If you recently purchased a retail version of Windows XP,
it should already have SP1 integrated. The only way to tell
is to view the actual XP CD itself. Even so, it will not have
the latest critical updates included. Those you can download
from the Windows Update website. Here is a link to a recent
Update Package from Microsoft:

i guess time will tell, but i've already started downloading sp1a just in
case i need to make a slipstream.

that's what i'm trying to avoid. i'm a control freak and would prefer to
download all the necessary updates before performing a clean install on my
system.

Yeah, i just found that myself and it's really cool they came out with the
rollup. now i'm trying to figure out which of the updates are not included
in it. quite the chore. i have the page at the link you provided with a
listing of all included patches and i'm comparing it to the list of critical
and recommended updates at the windows update catalog. there's gotta be an
easier way! ;)

thanks for the quick response.
