Windows XP SP3 and Windows XP Gold Version.

Hello NewsGroup,

I have read much here about Windows XP SP3, and Windows XP Gold edition. Being it is not
recommended to install SP3 on the Gold Version of XP. So I Google'd "What is Windows XP
Gold", and got not as many different answers to links.

Some links stated it was the code base used for that particular release, some stated it was
a System Builder's Edition. I don't know, and the reason why I ask is, how do I determine if
my copy of XP is XP gold? It is the Professional retail edition with Version 2002 on the
box. No service packs, more correctly, pre-service packs.

Here are some quotes for some websites regarding my query;

"A Gold version is a version that was released to manufacturing. But in today's marketing,
they can plaster that onto just about anything. In short, it means little."

"...XP "Gold" being the first release made to PC manufacturers. This "Gold" version code is
not for consumers but for PC Makers such as HP/Compaq/DELL etc..."

Thanks and regards,

The examples you cite are from people who have taken things out of context
and have gotten it wrong. XP Gold is the final version of XP that was
released to manufacturing. The fact that copies of Gold were given to OEMs
does not mean that Gold was OEM only. It appears your copy is Gold in that
there are no service packs included in it.

Currently, it's not recommended to install SP3 (which is still only in
the testing phase) at all!

Many thanks Ron, it's a part of my Windows XP before I install SP3 homework. I now know
clearly what I should do first.

The user is just planning ahead. We are only days away from rtm so it is
timely.

I wasn't aware it was that close. It seems that the RTM date keeps on
getting pushed back!

The trade press is reporting release to Connect, MSDN and TechNet on Monday
and to WU around the 29th. The SP3 newsgroup on betanews (the Microsoft
newsgroup server for beta newsgroups) has already been taken down.

About freaking time!

I know what you are saying, and I agree, but in all fairness the only
release date MS has ever given for SP3 has been the first half of 2008.
They could deliver as late as June 30 without being behind schedule.

WinXP Gold = WinXP w/out any Service Packs, as released in October 2001.

Thanks PA Bear, put very simply. If you Googled the same query I did, you would see just how
many definitions, and more interpretations than a religious text there is to "What is
Windows XP Gold".

Thanks and regards,

Thanks Colin, I neither share the fervour of the Third Coming of The Service Pack, from the
Good Lord Microsoft. I am planning to rebuild my PC and wanted to make sure what XP edition
I have as to know how to install SP3.

Thanks and regards,
