I recently changed from Windows ME, to Windows 2000 Pro,
and now every time I start my computer, and try to connect
to the internet, I have to restart my computer any where
from 8-10 times before I can make a connection. Even if I
do an update or anything that requires restarting my
computer, I have to restart 8-10 times again. I spoke to
Verizon support, and they told me this problem is with
Windows 2000 Pro, they said they have had this complaint
before, and Microsoft knows about it, but want tell them
how to fix it. Can anyone help. I would be extremely
grateful.

WAN via DHCP or PPPoE ?

Dave

Dave,
I am not sure. How do I find out? I hope you see this,
because I have tried to respond, but it would not go
through. Thanks.

You NEED to know this !

Generally, but not always, if you are in a former GTE (fGTE) territory, you use DHCP. If
you are in a former BellAtlantic (fBA; like me) territory you use PPPoE. Albeit, some in
the fGTE areas are now using PPPoE.

Dave,
I live in Baltimore, and our phone service used to be
BellAtlantic, if that helps. Is there some way I can check
on the computer itself, to see what setting it is on?

Chances are you use PPPoE for WAN connection.

I *highly* suggest obtaining a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41. It has many
advantages that include, but not limited to...

PPPoE WAN connector such that is, not the PC makes the WAN connection
Simplistic FireWall to block Internet worms
DHCP server for LAN nodes
Four 10/100 MB/s switched Ethernet ports
Allows upto ~253 PCs to share the one DSL connection

Dave,
Thanks for the info. Is there some sort of setting, or
something, I can change in what I have, because I really
don't need a router at this time? I have heard Microsoft
will tell you how, for a service charge. Thanks again.
