Vanishing restore points on drive C:

Q

Qu0ll

Vista Ultimate x64
C: 50GB
D: 280GB

I have configured System Protection to protect drives C: and D: but the
restore points on drive C: go missing after a day or so. The restore points
on drive D: are being retained.

I have tried creating manual restore points and it creates them without any
problems - other than that they disappear some hours later. It does create
daily restore points but they too are vanishing after a while.

There is over 15GB of free space on drive C: and in all other respects the
system is working perfectly.

Any suggestions as to how to get the restore points to be retained?

Are you running any system cleanup/optimizing programs? Some are a bit
over-aggressive in what they remove.

Thanks but no, nothing like that. I have Crap Cleaner but it is not running
and the problem was there before I installed it.

Any other suggestions/ideas?

Sometimes the system restore cache becomes corrupt. You can try this, but
you will loose all points that you may have saved.

Go to Computer | Properties | Advanced System Settings | System Protection

Turn off restore on all drives. Reboot. Then do the above a 2nd time and
turn on protection for your selected drives. This will have cleared out the
old cache and will begin the formation of a new one. See if it works now.

OK thanks Richard, I'll give it a go and report back in a day or so.

Sadly, it didn't work - the C: drive restore point has been blown away
already.

How can I get restore points created on the C: drive to persist?

Are you dual booting with Windows XP?

Are you doing a boot time defrag with PerfectDisk?

Both of these things will delete restore points.

Are you dual booting with Windows XP?

No, Vista is the only OS on the machine.
Are you doing a boot time defrag with PerfectDisk?

No, I am not.

It must be something else - any other ideas? It is a serious situation to
not be able to use System Restore.

I have the same problem you have. I have my system set up with a boot
manager that eliminates the problem of erasing the restore points when dual
booting. But even when I don't boot into the other OS (which I seldom do),
my restore points disappear after a few days to a week. I also get no
automatic restore points created at the beginning of a day/boot. When I
first installed Vista, I think I had restore points that were over a week
old. My drive is 1/3 empty and has over 15GB free, so I don't think it would
be throwing them out for space reasons.

I've seen other posts about this problem and wonder if MS is investigating.
I use the MS disk cleanup, but do not request that my restore points be
removed...only the temp files, trash, etc.

No, as I stated, this happens with no dual booting. XP can't even see the
Vista operating system with the boot manager I have, but I lose the restore
points even when I don't boot to XP at all (I seldom do and will probably
remove it altogether sometime in the near future.)

I do believe that Microsoft should look into the problem we seem to have over
'Restore Points'. I often try out new programs / hardware to see what works
the best for me.

What happens is there are several restore points where new items have been
tried and removed again due to problems/drivers. However I can't turn back to
an earlier restore point say 3 devices earlyer and in the lat 2 weeks I have
at least 10 restore points created automatically which I do not want! So if
something does not work you are stuck with it or a re-format etc again. While
this continues I can not see companies changing over to Vista in the droves
that Microsoft would like. It is home users that drive bussness. If I go to a
company and they ask me if I use Vista at all and do I have any problems with
Vista and what is the true compatabilty like? What am I to say other than my
personial experances?
