Thanks in advance,

I'm sure you'll get some answers, but my answer to you is that you don't
need anything like that with XP. In fact, "registry cleaners" and the
like most often do more harm than good. See this link for general
maintenance suggestions:

Hi

There is a built-in utility in XP:

From Start>Run type

sfc /scannow

You may need to have your XP CD to hand.

Thanks in advance,

Utility programs such as this in XP don't add much value and often times
cause more problems than they are worth. What are the problems that you are
trying to address?

Hi Rock,
First let me thank all of you once again for your excellent advice and the
sharing of your knowledge.

Actually my computer has slowed down opening programs, in particular
"Outlook Express". I ran the troubleshooter and it told me that the
"Image.dll" file was damaged or corrupted and to replace it. I could not find
the "Image.dll" file in my restore disk so I had a "live chat" with the
computer manufactor and he suggested I do a complete restore (how ridiculous)
and NEVER responded as to where the "Image.dll" file was in the restore disk
(A real jerk). I really don't want to go through the trouble of backing
everything up and doing a complete restore, and thought a utility program
might do the trick.

I'm really glad you posted back with the details. Image.dll is part of
an adware program. The reason that your computer is slow is because it
is infested. Cleaning up an infested computer normally does not require
doing a clean install (restore to factory). Of course I can't see your
computer and I'm not going to say that a clean install is never
necessary, but with XP it really is the last resort.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do all
prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Hi "Malke",
Again thank you for your post.
However I must apologize for posting inaccurate information. I went back to
my printed copy of my XP troubleshooting log and it was NOT the "Image.dll"
file it stated needed replacing it was the "Imagehlp.dll" file that is
missing or damaged.
Thanks again

Same answer. Your computer is infested. Imagehlp.dll is a process
belonging to an advertising program by WebSearch.

Ok, now we see the problem. Malke gave you good information on removing the
malware. Good luck.

To Malke, Rock, and Will,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the unselfish sharing of your great
storehouse of knowledge for us virtual novices in this computer game in these
newsgroups..

I have downloaded and printed the Elephantboy Computer information and will
be studying it in the a.m. before I attempt to remove whatever malware there
is in this computer. I am a mechanical engineer by degree, but have just been
playing with computer repair (my own and family's) for the past five years. I
just went to the library and started reading on computer repair and jumped
right in. I must say that fortunately I have had some success, but I am also
aware that I in NO-WAY have your knowledge.
Hence my coming here for advice.
As stated above, I'm going to jump into this mission in the a.m. after
carefully studying the repair procedures and will repost here on my success
or lack thereof.
But in all honesty, I think I can "gitter done" with the help ya'll have
given me.
Many thanks again.

Thanks for the very sweet words. We all started as beginners and we all
have our areas of expertise. I think mechanical engineers are Awesome!
You guys actually know how stuff works. I only know computers! My VCRs
still blink 12:00 ;-)

If you need more help, please post back. Take it slowly and methodically
and you'll be fine.

You're welcome Adrian, and thanks for the kind words. We all learned by
doing, eh? Good luck.

Good Morning Guys,
Well I am still in the "information mode", and thank you for your kind
words, as a matter of fact it is I that thinks you guys are "AWESOME"!! And
yes before I attempt any "mission" I try to gather as much info as possible
and make every effort to be methodical.

Now if I have not worn your patience thin I have a couple more questions and
then upon your replies, it's gonna be off to the races removing malware.

Several years ago my daughter's computer acquired a milicious worm, trojan,
whatever, it had a name and I was able to acquire a removal tool from McAfee
to remove it, but it required removal performed from "Safe Mode" also. And as
I recall, the CD Rom would not operate from the "Safe Mode". Now as I said it
was some time ago and it was on an old HP R500 computer with Win 95. So my
first question is do you think the CD Rom in this much newer Emachines T1100
will work in "Safe Mode"?? And is there a "name" for the infestation?
(Actually that's two questions in one...I apologize.)

And secondly in the deep dark recesses of my mind it seems that I recall an
MS Automatic Update that installed a "Malware Removal Tool" but I can't find
it in my "add / remove programs" am I wrong here???

Oh, incidently, I run the "Corporate Edition of Symantic Client" (free to me
from my old employer) and It scans every week. Also I run "Adaware SE" every
week and delete all tracking and "MSL's"(?) each week and I keep both updated
weekly, so I'm really mistified how this thing got "Infested".

Again thanks to you "Heros".

Mucho thanks again guys!!!!
I wish I could buy ya'll a lunch or at least a donut and a cup of coffee.
Have a great day,
Adrian

Great, things are starting to get there. Problems with the desktop and
taskbar are often times an after affect of malware and it's removal.
