Mysteriously re-appearing "task"

XP Pro, SP2

Don't know if this is an XP issue, or Symantec: Every time I reboot, I find
a new task in my Scheduled Tasks for NAV "Quick Scan". It doesn't seem to
set an actual schedule for the task ("Last Time Run" is "never" and "Next
Time Run" is "never.) But I don't know why it always inserts itself.

I'm concerned because I think Quick Scan is causing some problems -- and I
find that if I check the Activity Log in Systemsworks itself, there IS a
"quick scan" that seems to occur almost daily, at almost the same time --
even though "Scheduled Tasks" has nothing scheduled, and Systemsworks itself
doesn't have anything scheduled.

FWIW, Systemsworks log shows that it ran as "System", and not under my user
name. (I am the administrator.)

I can't find any Symantec usergroups -- know where any are?

Thanks.

You da' man!

Quick Scan is set to scan whenever virus definitions are updated. Live
Update is set to check every four hours. And the "offending" quick scans
that show up in the log appear at the same hours that Live Update does its
thing.

Now, let's brainstorm, if you don't mind. What's been happening is that
every once in a while I'll come in in the morning, and my computer will
still be powered on, but it won't respond to any mouseclicks or keystrokes.
I have to turn it off (with the power button) and reboot. (All power
options are set so nothing "goes to sleep" or shuts down or goes to stand
by, or anything like that, FWIW.) I noticed that these events seem to
coincide with a NAV full system scan (scheduled automatically) that
according to the log does not finish because in the middle of the full scan,
a quick scan starts.

(1) I could deactivate automatic full scans, but I'd rather not.
(2) I could tell Quick Scan not to scan after virus def'n updates.
or
(3) Do you think the problem is Quick Scan jumping in in the middle of a
Full Scan, or Live Update jumping in in the middle of the Full Scan?

I know this is way outside of an XP problem (or is it?) Does anyone know of
a NAV usergroup? (Little hope that NAV tech support would even have a
clue......)

Thanks.

Milt:

Thanks for your help.

Hmmm. "Live Chat" with Symantec tech support. So instead of speaking on
the phone with someone who's clueless, I can chat online with someone who's
clueless. Now, that's an attractive way to waste an hour or so. . . . :)

Ken,

You may be right, often they're clueless. But sometimes they helpl. And
the Live Chat is at no charge. The telephone support wants to charge you for
not helping. Sometimes you have to try more than once to get an answer.

Good luck,
Milt
