What do you mean your mother bought a laptop with XP Home, but no disk? She
did not get a CD? She did not get a license?

AFAIK Microsoft did offer additional licenses at discount prices for
additional computers in the same household, but I am not sure if they still
do.

Not possible...The laptop should have a recovery cd which will work ok,
a xp upgrade runs about 90.00 but one needs a past cd of any windows OS
to install.

When my mum bought her laptop in came with winxp already installed but they
didnt give her a copy of xp.
i dont know if she was given a licence this is why i need to know if i can
buy an extra licence to use on her machine with my xp disk......

I would just use the Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder on her machine to find out
what her CD Key is, then burn her a copy of your XP Home disc assuming
it's the same version as what she has installed.

Thanks can you tell me the steps to do that?
also if there is a cd key i know from experience that one key wont help to
regester it - mine had to be over the phone or online both were not possable
to use a cd key.
plus burning a copy of xp would in my mind be a problem because of the copy
right protection , i have not tryed to before but if it is possable to use a
cd key to register it how is it done and is it legal - from the sounds of
this ide prefer to buy a second licence........

thanks shaun b

Hi Shaun,

I agree with Michael. If you're afraid to make her a copy of yours, you
could still use yours to reinstall but before you do that, you need to get
the cd key from her machine. Here are a couple of programs you can run to
get that cd key. You can find them here:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml or
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/rockxp.html

Both of these work. Let us know what happens.

The reinstallation files could be on a hidden partition on the laptop. Some
makers do this instead of giving you a CD. The key could be on a sticker on
the bottom of the laptop.

Since it is a Laptop, look on the bottom - if it is an OEM version of XP
Home/Pro the key will be on the COA attached to the bottom of the laptop.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

Completely wrong, as usual. Why do you bother?
