Win 98se disk defrager with XP

Shaun B

Hi, is it ok and possable to use the win 98se disk defrager on win XP
instead of using the one that came with XP? I ask because with the old one
I get a full screen display of each cluster being moved as not with win XP.
Im trying to defrag an 80 gig HDD but win xp's defrag keeps freezing.

Thanks Shaun B.

Probably will depend on whether XP drive is formatted NTFS. If so, a
definite *NO*.

Try running Disk Error Checking before running defrag.

How much RAM memory?

Have you ever run chkdsk?

Before running chkdsk run Disk CleanUp in each active User
Profile to remove Temporary Internet Files.

Then try running Disk Defragmenter. If you still encounter problems run
it in Safe Mode.

Hope this helps.

To add to earlier answer - run XP defrag in "safe" mode, might avoid the
"freeze" problem?
