Using WDS on network drives

I don't seem to be able to pursuade WDS to search server-based folders from
my PC. Options won't let me even select them to be indexed; they don't show
up there.

Do I need to install WDS on the server itself? Nothing I've read suggests
that, and I really try to avoid installing beta software on a production
server.

And, just to reduce irritation, is there any way to go directly to Search
Companion in places WDS doesn't support, instead of always having WDS pop
up and tell me to take my silly-ass problem down the hall every time?

Cool! Thanks! We'll see how that works after I reboot.

I have to wonder how we were supposed to know that. WDS shouldn't offer
what it can't do. Grumble...
