Hi,

You need a voice capable modem and appropriate software (usually provided by
the modem manufacturer). Hyperterminal is not it.

There are "Voice Over IP" products available, some of them
(including the one I use!) are (or were) free to download.
All they need is a registered user at "each end" of the
web.

Probably best on broadband connections, as there's a lot
of data in sound!

Never seen it in "native" Windows XP, though (but then I
haven't looked).

Nigel.

I have a feeling that there is something in Windows Messenger. It requires
you to subscribe though.

This is not quite what you are asking about but it is something you might
consider.
I have been using Vonage for the past six months and like it extremly
well, the person you are calling needs no special hookup or anything and for
$29 a month with unlimited calls I told bellsouth to take a hike.

Check the web site of the modem manufacturer.
