Using Real Player and Quicktime with Nero Installed

I am running Windows XP Professional. I would like to install Real Player
and Quicktime but I am worried about the effects on Media Player 10 and Nero
(which I use for CD & DVD burning).

Does anyone have all of these players running without consequences on XP and
also have Nero installed?

I *had* all of those pieces of software installed on an XP box for some
time, and everything worked fine. The only problem that you might run into
is programs stealing file associations from each other during installation,
but that is easily enough remedied (if it happens at all) by tweaking each
program's settings. Just pay attention during the installations.

I eventually ditched Nero in favor of Roxio...

Real Player is an irritating, invasive piece of crap.

Avoid it at all costs-it'll mess up your multimedia file associations,
constantly nag you about things, etc.

There are alternatives, I can't remember them, perhaps
someone else can.

Hi,

I have all of them installed on one particular system without ill effect on
any of them. I would recommend that you disable qttask.exe from loading at
boot after installing Quicktime, it's quite unnecessary (done from the
startup tab of msconfig) to be autoloading. Same thing goes for RealPlayer.

I'm not sure I feel quite so strongly about it, but I would recommend
installing RealPlayer 8 as opposed to the new version, whatever it is -- 8
was the last version before RealOne, which is I think what VG was talking
about being invasive. I've never found v8 to be quite so bad.

At one time I did have Real Player and QuickTime loaded but I don't remember
the versions. Don't these programs both have the option to disable loading
at startup as a preference instead of going thru MS Config? Or am I
thinking of older versions of the programs?

Thanks for the info!

Hi,

You're thinking of older versions of both the programs and of msconfig. The
older Win9x version of the system configuration utility was not always able
to disable the loading of the program, so back then it was recommended that
you first check within the programs' options (I still have a page on this at
my site listed below). Much has changed since then, and the system config
utility has much more control over the startup load now.
