Is a router necessary when using a printer on a different subnet?
If not, what is necessary to print to a printer on a different subnet?

I was asked to set up a printer driver locally to use a printer on another
subnet.
I can successfully ping the printer, but I cannot telnet to it.
We are using a VPN.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Tracey

Making any connection to anything on a different logical network
requires routing. So, yes.

If you can ping it, routing is already in place. Not being able to
telnet may be expected depening on the printer, or any firewalls in
place.

Provided you have proper routing, a VPN isn't an issue.

Basic tests. Can you telnet to the printer from a system in the same
logical network?

Yes I can telnet to a local printer.
It confused me when I could not telnet to it.
I set it up via standard tcp/ip port.

Thanks, Tracey
