Using Media Center License for XP Pro?

G

Guest

Hello,

I not so long ago purchased a HP laptop. It came preloaded with Media Center
2005.

I wish to format this laptop... and I dont want to use the reload disks and
to be honest i'd much rather restore with XP Pro.

I cannot seem to locate an OEM Media Center 2005 Media Kit...
I am unsure where I might stand using XP Pro OEM CD with my Media Center
2005 license?

Anybody willing to clear up my confusion?

Regards
Matt :)

As the other reply states, it won't work - and also note that OEM licenses
are permenantly 'linked' to the hardware with which they came, so even if
you have an OEM copy of XP Pro (& a CD key for same) you can't use it on
this laptop. If I were you, I'd just go with the reload disks from HP, or
buy a retail copy of XP Pro.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any
retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice
versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD,
and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail
product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD.
Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.

Well, to clarify a fine point, he could use it if it's a generic,
unbranded OEM license and has never been installed on any other computer.

That's true; I should've said "bundled." Thanks.

I don't know what you mean by an OEM Media Center 2005 Media Kit. An XP Pro
OEM CD should install if you use the CD key that came with it (but you'll
need to download the drivers for the laptop from the HP tech support web
site). The product key for the Media Center version will not work. Also
has that XP Pro OEM been installed on another system? If so by the license
it's tied to the first computer on which it's installed and can't be
transferred to a different system.
