Windows xp pro conversion to media center 2005

I have a dell pc that has xp pro installed from a company I used to work for.
The version was installed using volume liscensing. When I purchased this
computer it had XP media center on it. I can't convert xp pro back to media
center 2005. Each time I have tried the install or repair there are some
files that won't copy and then after xp is done and it reboots the computer
locks up on with XP logo and please wait. I think this is when media center
is suppossed to install...Any idea how to get media center to work on this
without removing the pro version.

You can't do an upgrade from Pro to Media Center, it has to be a clean
install. You could do a dual boot though.

I am thinking about doing that, but I only have one partition. I think I
need a separate partion for the media center? I tried using an external
drive to install xp media center, but I can't get the bios to recognize the
drive. I have the driver files for the xternal, but no luck installing them.
The external is usb connection and my computer is a m1710 laptop.
If I install media center over xp pro will I have to reinstall all the
software?

You can't reinstall Media Center "over XP Pro", as I said. It cannot do an
upgrade. It has to be a clean install. Apps will have to be reinstalled
from their original media.

None of the XP versions are designed to run off an USB external drive.

For a dual boot each OS should at the least be in it's own partition. Use
the program BootItNG from Terabyte Unlimited. They offer a 30 day full
featured trial version. Use it to partition the drive.
