Using Hyperterminal with a mobile phone

I have a mobile phone that is connected to my PC using USB. When I create a
new connection in Hyperterminal and use the Com port assigned to the phone
(as viewed in the Device Manager) I get an error meassage that there is a
problem communicating with the device.

Is there a problem using the assigned Com port from USB? Does Hyperterminal
only work with physical Serial Port?

many thanks

I think it depends on what device it is and if your phone has a modem
capabilitiy. We cannot answer your question in that way.

Thank you

The phone has modem capability. It comes up as Modem in the Device Manager

I have a similar problem... If it's anything like my Nokia, there will be a
System Tray application also used for communicating with the device (e.g.
for downloading messages and updating address book, ringtones, logos etc).
In the case of my phone, this system tray app hogs the port that you want to
connect to in HyperTerminal, which prevents HyperTerminal from connecting to
the phone.

You have to shut down the System Tray application first (in my case
NCLTRAY.EXE). You may have to do this from Task Manager, as my version does
not have a 'exit' menu option.
Once you close the system tray app, tell HyperTerminal to reconnect and it
should go through OK.
