using backup

I've been using the backup program that came with win xp (home edition).

After backing up the c: drive I've been trying to do incremental backups. I
want to replace only files that have changed or been added since the 1st
backup but it seems to be adding alot of files (rather than replacing) to
the original archive and it seems to be adding more than just new files or
ones that have changed

Is there a way to get it to replace the files - and only the files that have
changed or been added?

Thanks.

it kinda depends on if you have checked to append to your existing backup
or overwrite it.

an incremental backup if you have previously chosen to backup everything,
will also backup system files that have changed with updates and service
packs.

for just data files ntbackup works ok.

I prefer Acronis True Image for all my backup needs.

When I selected to replace the files, it erased the whole previous backup
and replaced it with the new incremental files.

You're asking for an incremental backup. However, you may find that you
need to be a lot more specific about what files you want backed up for this
to be practical.

If you do a complete backup of the C drive, and then ask for incremental
backups, *yes*, you *will* get a lot of files backed up, probably including
pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys. Those two files alone will probably require
a couple of gigabytes. And, many files from the temp and temporary
internet files folders will be included.

You should be very selective about what you are backing up, and not include
locations with these varying system files. You really don't need any
system or program folders.

If you're using XP Home, there is probably not a good reason to back up the
entire drive. XP Home doesn't support ASR, so you can't restore the entire
system; you have to reinstall anyway. If you want to back up the entire
drive so that it's restorable, use an imaging program like Acronis
TrueImage.
