XP Backup Utility Confusion

I'm confused about some of the options in the XP Backup Utility. I think I
want to make an incremental backup. What I think that means is that after
I've made a "normal" backup of a set of files, an "incremental" backup will
only copy the files in the set that are new or changed since I made the
original "normal" backup.

To restore, I "will need to have the last normal backup set as well as all
incremental backup sets in order to restore your data."

I'm OK with that -- until I actually go to do the "incremental" backup. I
then have to "select the media" to backup to. I'm given the option to
replace the old file or to append to the old file or to create an entirely
new file. So, assuming that my "normal" backup created the file
MainBack.msf, and I'm about to do an "incremental" backup, do I

a) append my "incremental" backup to MainBack.msf
b) replace MainBack.msf with the incremental backup
c) direct the "incremental" backup to a new file, Incr1.msf?

And if the answer is (c), when I make the second "incremental" backup, do I
create Incr2.msf or do I append the second "incremental" backup to Incr1.msf

c) direct the "incremental" backup to a new file, Incr1.msf? Safest and surest method

And if the answer is (c), when I make the second "incremental" backup, do

Incr1.msf
Creating a new file is the safest and surest.
