Using a Wireless Ethernet bridge with Vista

A

Andy1L

Hi,
I just upgraded to Vista Business on my laptop and I can't get it to connect
to the internet using my Netgear Wireless Ethernet Bridge.

The Network Identification process identifies the wired LAN and the wireless
network, tells me I'm connected to multiple networks and only grants me Local
access. I can connect to LAN devices on the other end of the bridge but it
won't connect outside of my subnet.

I have an XP desktop machine that uses the same bridge to connect to the DSL
router downstairs and it works fine. The laptop also worked fine when it was
running XP.

Any one got any ideas?

Hi
I have similar problem with Vista (Ultimate), XP and Netgear. Both machines
connect fine to my broadband modem and the XP connects fine through the
Netgear WPN824v2. But when i connect the Vista machine either into the
Netgear (with or without the XP machine connected) the interconnect
connection on both machines appears to drop every 15-30 mins and takes 5 mins
to recover.
I have spent many hours on the Netgear support line but the best they could
do in the end was swap out the router. Unfortunately the new one has the
same problem. My previous Linksys router displayed similar behaviour.
Conclusion - there is something odd happening with Vista?
HELP too!

Hi Gerald,
Thanks very much for the suggestion. I've tried it and it still refuses to
extend the connection from a "Local" to an "Internet".

I don't have a DHCP server accessible to the laptop so I have an Alternate
Configuration specified under the TCP/IPv4 settings. This is on the same
network as the bridge and the access point. Not sure if this would make a
difference or not?

Hi

Do u get the same error using wired and/or wireless connection to Netgear?

Try disabling IPv6 and setting static ip on IPv4.

Check the router firmware level.

Disable all firewalls and AV/Spyware temporarily.

I am using a Netgear DG834G Wireless and dont have any problems.

Thanks. I have unbound ipv6.

I ran the IDGEvaluators test (ver 1.3.5.0) and everything was supported by
the router except:
NAT Type - "The IGD's NAT type is SYMMETRIC"
UPnP Support - (strange because this is a feature of the router). Came up
with the following
"Adding a new port mapping to the IGD:
External Port : 61630
Internal Port : 61591
Protocol : UDP
Internal Client : 192.168.1.2
Enabled : TRUE
Description : removeme5

get_StaticPortMappingCollection returned null IStaticPortMappingCollection
Failed to add the new port mappings
5 new port mappings have been added successfully
Deleting all the test port mappings from the IGD"

This may indicate that it can't do more than 5.

The connection to the internet is still up and down like a yoyo.

Thanks

Tom

Symmetric NATs can be a problem with Vista. And it looks like UPnP
support is not all there. Unless they have a firmware fix in the
latest firmware http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WPN824v2.asp
you may need to replace this router.

Thanks. I have unbound ipv6.

I ran the IDGEvaluators test (ver 1.3.5.0) and everything was supported by
the router except:
NAT Type - "The IGD's NAT type is SYMMETRIC"
UPnP Support - (strange because this is a feature of the router). Came up
with the following
"Adding a new port mapping to the IGD:
External Port : 61630
Internal Port : 61591
Protocol : UDP
Internal Client : 192.168.1.2
Enabled : TRUE
Description : removeme5

get_StaticPortMappingCollection returned null IStaticPortMappingCollection
Failed to add the new port mappings
5 new port mappings have been added successfully
Deleting all the test port mappings from the IGD"

This may indicate that it can't do more than 5.

The connection to the internet is still up and down like a yoyo.

Thanks

Tom

(Sorry if there are duplicate replies)

Many thanks for your help on this. Its a wee bit annoying when Netgear put
on the box "Supports Windows Vista". I guess I should go for a router which
is properly certified by Microsoft. Not an easy thing in New Zealand!

the listing for this router on the MS site is, well, inscrutable

http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Pr...id=712&sv=&f=&pn=WPN824v2 - V1.0.2.2&oid=6292

"Certain device manufacturer variations of this device may not be
compatible. For more information, go to the device manufacturer's
website or contact your retailer. "

the symmetric NAT result indicates that this is one of those
"certain variations".

Just to let you know that this problem was resolved.

The resolution involved purchasing a replacement wireless router (Belkin N1
Vision) which has the Windows Vista "Works with" label on the box.
Everything has been fine since.

Fortunately, Netgear agreed to a full refund on the "old" router.

There is a lesson in here for me. Check the Vista compatibility site before
purchasing!

Thanks for your help.

glad you were able to get the refund.
MS does have some info on the logo program and general guidance at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/logo.mspx

I mentioned this a few times in:
