I am staying with family temporarily after selling my home. I kept my
roadrunner account to retain my email addresses until I find a new home. I am
hooked up to their internet, Verizon FIOS, thru a wireless connection. I am
receiving my mail in Windows mail, but I can't seem to get the outgoign
configured to send on their server. I entered the smtp server,
outgoing.verizon.net and set it for authentication using their email and
password but that doesn't work. Any ideas? tia

Did you use the custom authentication setting?
Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties, Servers,
Settings, Log on using...
If you get an error message, right-click on it, copy, then paste it
into a reply here.

You need to get the setup information from your e-mail provider. Check
their web page e-mail setup. There may be a different inbound server name
and most assuredly a different port number. If you are using 25 it's
probably wrong since that number is used when you are using a mail server
within the same ISP to which you are connected. If you told us who your
mail provider was we might have been able to point you right to the setup
page. Sometimes there is someone around who knows that specific item.

You need to set up your roadrunner account, by just using the Verizon FIOS?
smtp server name in the setup, with your own POP settings, username and
password.

Does roadrunner have a webmail site that you can use with your account, in
case my previous advice fails?

You might check if your setup for the outgoing port is right:

http://netservices.verizon.net/portal/link/help/selection

You might also check if Roadrunner allows you to connect to
the outgoing mail server using a port other than port 25, since
port 25 is often blocked if the connection crosses from one
internet provider's equipment to another's:

<http://help.rr.com/AA/rrwho.aspx?ReturnUrl=/HMSLogic/email_help_topic.aspx?topic=E+mail&topic=E+mail>

That is what I am doing usingVerizon SMTP (outgoing.verizon.net) and
Roadrunner incoming. I am using web mail now to send but it is not my
preferred method.

I tried using Roadrunner chat for help and they said to use webmail. That is
what I am doing now but it is not my preferred method.

Here is the error message:

Subject 'testing', Account: 'Wild Honey', Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 SIZE 20971520', Port: 25, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

Do not enable the SSL option. To disable it, go to Tools, Accounts,
select the account, Properties, Advanced. For the outgoing mail server
(the one using port 25) unselect the SSL option.
Also, go to the Servers tab, and make sure that the
"Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is NOT checked.
Try sending again.

Tried that, got the following error:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject
'testing', Account: 'Wild Honey', Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Authentication Required', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Ok, sorry I missed you were using RoadRunner. If you are visiting, you
probably should still be using RR on your outgoing mail. But Port 25
probably will not work unless you are using you RR as the ISP. If the
premise you are visiting is using a Verison ISP and E-mail and you want to
use that persons mail account you need to use that person's mail setup
information, unless you have a Verison e-mail account.

Please review my prior advice and make sure you have implemented it:

You must use the custom authentication setting.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties, Servers,
Settings, Log on using..., then enter your Verizon credentials.

When "My server requires authentication" is checked, by default your
email program will do SMTP authentication using the POP credentials,
which in your case is not appropriate.
