User Profile being created

G

Guest

am running Win2K Pro, and had the following occur twice in 2 years where
all of a sudden another user profile is some how created (the original user
profile with a " .RAM" extension). I can still sign on with my original user
password, but almost all of the applications are looking for the original
user profile's data and configuration directories. I have the feeling that I
may have inadvertently deleted an NTUSER dat file or corrupted it.

Is there a way to correct this situation by changing, renaming or copying a
user profile, OR changing a registry setting so the original user profile is
used? I tried copying the original profile using the Systems Properties /
User Profile / Copy To function with little luck. Any help or tool
recommendation would be appreciated.

If the profile is corrupt, you can rename the profile(while logged on as
local admin), then when the user logs on again a new profile will be created
from the image in \default user. You can then copy over the items you need
from the renamed profile. Copy the folder contents not the folders
themselves. When your sure you have all you need, you can delete the renamed
profile(s). Use the import function of your e-mail software. Don't overwrite
ntuser.dat

Dave, sounds straightforward - thanks. But what do you mean by using import
function of email s'ware to import ntuser.dat??

Those were separate unrelated statements. For example; if you use Outlook
the default store for the *.pst file is;
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
which you can import from within Outlook.

If you use OE see Tom Koch's web site for some excellent help on
backup/restoring your Outlook Express stuff. http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/
