Restoring User Profile

B

Brian Burgess

I am trying to restore a user profile using KB article 314045 and am getting
nowhere. Is anyone able to clarify the procedure.

"Copy documents from the current profile folder to the appropriate user
profile folder"

current profile folder does this mean the folder that I want to restore? i.e
my original data
user profile folder, is this the new folder that I have created which will
be designated username.computername?

Copy the contents of My Documents. Should I not be copying the entire
contents of the user folder?

When editing the profile registry key, I am confused as to which user
profile that I should be changing

My original profile name to the new path that is the current logon or the
current logon to the old path. All that I have succeeded in doing so far is
creating username.computername.000

I need clearer guidance as to which is the old and which is the new
files/folders.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You didn't say but I'll assume the profile is corrupt. You can rename it
while logged on as another user with local administrative rights, then when
you logon again a new default profile will be created from an image in
\default user. You can then copy the parts you need from the corrupt profile
\Desktop, \Favorites, etc. Don't copy the folders, but copy their contents
instead. Use your mail software's import function to restore your messages/
address book, etc.

No, the profile is not corrupt, I just deleted it by mistake. I am just not
clear with the Microsoft instructions with which files to copy (It seems
strange just to copy My Documents when there are obviously others associated
with the user profile) and I am very unclear from the instructions which
refers to a new file and which refers to my original.

The original files are definitely good but when I follow the instructions
with my interpretation I just end up creating another user profile. I am
obviously being a bit thick on this but I just keep creating another when I
log on.

For clarity sake please post the names of each profile (profile to be
restored and current profile). I'm assuming you had the entire profile
backed up somewhere. If not post the details.

Thanks Dave.

In the Documents and settings folder, I have:

B. Burgess which contains all of my folders including My Documents that I
want to restore the user profile for.

B. Burgess.RHC which was created when I discovered that I had deleted the
original username/profile

B. Burgess.RHC.000 which was created when I tried unsuccessfully to use
KB314045

I have not specifically tried to back up the original user file (B. Burgess)
it just still exists and seems to contain all relevant files.

B. Burgess and B.Burgess.RHC.000 exist in the registry image profile path.
B. Burgess.RHC has now disappeared from the profile image.

Should I backup the original B. Burgess folder before attempting any other
recovery?

The simplest thing to do would be to rename "B. Burgess", "B. Burgess.RHC",
and "B. Burgess.RHC.000" while logged on as another user with local
administrative rights, then when you logon again a new default profile will
be created from an image in \default user. You can then copy the parts you
need from the corrupt profile \Desktop, \Favorites, etc. Don't copy the
folders, but copy their contents instead. Use your mail software's import
function to restore your messages/ address book, etc. When you're sure you
have everything you can delete the orphaned/ corrupt profiles.
