user name gone from welcome screen

My computer downloaded the automatic updates, then asked me if I wanted to
restart to complete their installation. I was in the middle of working on
something, so I said no, and later when I was away from my computer it
restarted for me. But now, my user name (I only had one) is gone from the
welcome screen, and I can't get in.

I installed a second Windows XP in the same partition, and through it have
been able to reach all my programs and documents. I noticed it changed my old
user name to "owner", but there is no "owner" on the first XP's welcome
screen either. Is there any way to create a new user name or somehow get into
my old one on the first XP?

You could have just booted into safe mode and signed in as Admin then done a
system restore to before this happened. You can't operate two systems on
one partition so remove the new one.
Then do the updates again, this time monitoring what's going on.

Thank you, but how do I sign in as Administrator? It's not on the welcome
screen, and when I tried calling up the the logon window, and entering it
with a blank password since I don't have one, it wouldn't sign me on. Nor
would it after setting an Admin password and using it...

Admin in safe mode (tapping F8 while booting up) the pasword is usually not
set unless you have added one.
