user lost attachment after hours of work

I have a user who received an xls file from a client, she just openned it,
worked on it for several hours ,
then she closed it. She then frantically asked me where it would be when
she attempted to find it in excel.
I looked in the olk locations, but couldnt find it. Is there any way she
can recover her edited version of this file?

The user opened the original attachment, modified it, then closed Excel
- I assume Excel offered to save the altered content. When closing the
message, Outlook would probably also ask if the altered message
(attachment) should be saved. If this has been done, then the modified
Excel doc should be in the original email message.
