Attachments disappearing after emails are sent

I have a user who has an issue sending documents. The issue does not happen
all the time so I am stumped. When she sends the email with the attachment,
she will think that the attachment is in the email as she does not get any
type of error and its not until later that she finds out, usually because the
receiver emails her, that the attachment was not received. Again this does
not happen every time she sends an attachment. When she goes back into her
sent items the attachment is not in fact there.

I hope someone has a clue because I don't have one.

Thanks!

Is antivirus configured to actively scan incoming/outgoing email? This would
be the first thing I would look at. AV doesn't have to scan every email, the
real time scanner will catch whatever it's updated for.

A common cause of this is sending a Rich Text message to a non-Outlook user.
Rich Text is an Outlook-specific format and people not using Outlook cannot
see attachment on RIch Text messages.

I checked the Virus software and it is not scanning incoming or outgoing
emails.

So would the fact that the email is Rich text remove the attachment in the
senders sent items? What should I have her do if the problem is the Rich text
format?

Have the user switch to HTML or plain text. Rich text format is specific to
Outlook, no other email client supports it.

The format of the message will not affect the retention of attachments in the
Sent Items folder. If you composed it with an attachment, it should have the
attachment in Sent Items regardless of the format.
