User icons and unread emails

When one gets ready to sign into the computer by clicking the proper
desktop icon, next to the icon it states how many unread email
messages you have. Mine says I have 20 unread email messages, when,
in fact, I have none. This just started happening recently; until
now, it always said the correct number of emails. What's going on,
and how do I fix this? I guess it is not that big a deal, but it is
really annoying.
