Help

Just did a clean up of advertising popup software (Bargain Buddy I think) and now I can not get back into Windows XP

Symptoms are - everything boots normally & presented with Login Screen
I key in my correct Windows XP username & password (which has full admin rights)
XP goes into "Load your personal settings
My Background Wallpaper comes up fine & mouse operates fine but not start button, system tray or desktop items yet
Machine thinks for about 15 secs & then dialog box of "Closing Network Connections" followed by "Saving Personal Settings" followed by "Logging user off" & then straight back to login screen
I can do this many times with exactly the same outcome
Everything is done very gracefully with no abnormal error messages

Things I have tried
(1) Logging in as another registered user - exactly the same outcom
(2) Logging in under safe mode - exactly the same outcom
(3) I have tried Cntrl-Alt-Del during personal settings loading & can't get task list up before user gets logged of
(4) I have tried restoring to last know working profile - same outcom
(5) Booted from Nortons emergency antivirus disk - scans O

I am sure it relates to the cleanup of this "Bargain Buddy" thing. I ran the Bargain Buddy uninstall and it ran cleanly. I think I also double clicked on an exe file called "Windows SD" ???

Some info
I am running Windows XP professional at the latest patch leve
I am running on an IBM Thinkpad R3
I run Partition Magic V7.1 - I have a number of disk partitions for separation of data but have only ever had one operating system installed (XP professional)

Any ideas out there ??? I am in the middle of a tough project & I really, really want to avoid rebuilding my electronic life right now !!!!

By the way, have used my wife's machine & email to right this - at least we have 1 operating machine to try & sort this mess out

Thanks

Dave

Try downloading the sasser removal tool (use the microsoft.com search engine to find the link for the download), your symptons are similar. By the way, last year I stopped using several partitions on same hard drive. It is my opinion that the software to do this has not caught up with hard drive technology, similar to the win 95 compression and creating a host drive tool that came with windows 95, it never worked and always eventually screwed up. If you have to reinstall your software (hopefully you have backed up your files) email me, I have learned a great reinstall technique that could be helpful. God Bless.
