User Accounts Disappeared

Running Windows XP Home Edition, and when I boot to the graphical logon
screen, my user accounts have disappeared. I am able to CTRL ALT DEL twice,
and log in as administrator, however shen I perform any adminstrator
functions, Windows says I don't have administrator priviledges. I tried Safe
mode, and I still don't have admin rights, even though I logon as
administrator. I also tried repairing XP, but says I don't have sufficient
rights. Has the OS been compromised? Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

When you press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, you can log on under
***any*** account, not just under Administrator.

Your first step should be to check if your accounts still
exist. Click Start / Run, then type

control userpasswords2

What accounts do you see?

I am not near the computer now, however I ran a utility on a boot disckette
that allows me to change the password for any user, and all the users were
listed. The administrator account was listed as "blank password"

Hey Sengupta,

Your computer battery seems to be faulty. Your PC clock is giving
erroneous time. Are you trying to get maximum exposure to your postings?

Once back to a normal boot in some account, you can Use TweakUI.
Once installed you will find it in Start>All Programs>Powertoys for
Windows XP
and its Logon page to check which accounts to 'show on Welcome screen'

Finally had a chance to run the 'control userpasswords2' cmd, and it wouldn't
allow me to view anything since I don't have adminstrator privileges.

The obvious response is: Log on under an admin account!

You can probably see all accounts like so:
- Click Start / Run
- Type cmd {OK}
- Type net user {Enter}

That is my point.....I have logged in as administrator, however Windows
doesn't seem to recognize that I am administrator.

I was logged in as admin...when I ran the last commant you suggested. I also
tried in Ctrl panel, users accounts, but even though I am logged in as
admin... I don't seem to have admin priviledges.

Perhaps you only think you're an administrator - someone
might have renamed the admin account. Start a Command
Prompt as suggested in my previous reply, then type this
command:

net user %UserName%.

Paste the response into your reply.

Tried that, but it didn't change my priveledges. I sucesfull logged in as
administrator, but I didn't gain admin rights. I ended up reloading the OS,
and I am now good to go. Thanks anyways for the help!

I never said that the command I suggested would change anything -
I merely asked that you post the output from the command. Reloading
the OS because of such a small problem is like buying a new car
when you run out of petrol.

I have the same problem. I only have one user, set up with Admin rights, but
the computer thinks I dont have sufficient rights. I have tried creating new
accounts, all as administrator, and still no luck. You'd be surprised how
little you can do on your pc without admin rights.

Do you have any ideas how one might get this fixed?
