User Account WITHOUT Internet Access?

I have a network at home with 2 pc's on a crossover cable setup. My pc is
the gateway to the internet.
Running XP Pro.
How do I set up an account for my kids and NOT let them have internet
access???
It seems that there are only 2 settings: Administrator or Limited. Even the
limited account lets them get internet access!
I would like them to have access Word and other school related programs but
NO internet, email.
Thanks for your help.

I'm new to XP as well but wouldn't this be handled under "Set Program Access
and Defaults.

If they (your kids) are indirectly connecting their PC to the internet using
your PC as a gateway (instead of connecting to the internet using a
router/gateway device), then your gateway PC must have Internet Connection
Sharing turned on, in order for your kids' PC to share the internet
connection on your gateway PC.

If this is your setup, then simply turn off ICS.

If you're using XP Pro, you can go to administrative tools>local security
policy, click the ip security policies listing in the left pane. I'm not
quite sure how to set it up from there, but maybe someone here could help ya
or you could find something on google. Good luck to ya. HTH

I'm making an assumption here since I have not worked with XP Pro yet so if
this is not the true case the idea should still work. Assuming XP Pro is
like W2K Pro set up your kids with limited access and then set the security
settings on the IE program file property page to allow only administrator
access. Remove everyone from the security tab and add admin. If XP Pro does
not show a security tab on the file properties page there should be another
way to do this.

There are many different ways to do it.

You can set security on the files they need to access the internet explorer
etc to no access for their username. You can also configure internet
explorer to use a non-existant proxy server and lock down IE so they cannot
change it.

The best thing to do is to network the 2 computers with a router and use the
features in the router to disable access by time.
Do you really not want them to never have any access ever? Many routers
will allow you to have times where access is allowed and not allowed.

The router will also give you much better security.

The solution is simple. Just turn off Internet Connection Sharing, so they
cannot share your internet connection.

If you remove permissions to access/execute the Internet Explorer program,
your kids will still be able to get on the internet using other programs,
such as Windows/MSN Messenger for chatting with strangers, Outlook Express
for Email or Newsgroup porn, Kazaa for file transfers and viruses and worms,
and so on and so on....

And if you remove permissions from these programs too, there are plenty of
alternatives they can find.
