2nd Post for User Account WITHOUT Internet Access?

J

Jack Barrett

I neglected to mention in my previous post that there are 3 accounts(Myself,
My Wife & My Kids) on my kids PC. I want to block ONLY them from accessing
the internet.

I have a network at home with 2 pc's on a crossover cable setup. My pc is
the gateway to the internet. Running XP Pro.

How do I set up an account for my kids and NOT let them have internet
access???
It seems that there are only 2 settings: Administrator or Limited. Even the
limited account lets them get internet access!
I would like them to have access Word and other school related programs but
NO internet, email.

Thanks again for your help.

Your description is a little confusing. Do the children (Ages ?),
have their own PC ? If so, why not just have the adults use the
primary machine and the kids on their own. Remove the NIC
and use a USB NIC and cable when you need to do support
via the Administrators account. But Children are going to want
Instant Messaging, File Sharing and like and won't like a
Stand-Alone PC.

No matter what types of interlocks you put on them, they'll
outsmart you in the end. This includes Limited accounts, Net
Nanny, NIS Parental Controls, Key stroke monitors, et all....

Hi R. McCarty,

There are 2 PC's on my network.
My PC with my account and my wife's.
Then there is the PC my kids use downstairs. My wife and I also have
accounts on this machine because it saves time going upstairs to my office.
I want to be able to just block them when they sign on.
Contrary to your posting, I am always ahead of them with settings and a
keylogger to track instant messaging/emails/websites.
The ONLY way that accounts can be changed is by me or my wife. They do not
have access to our passwords.
Hope I explained it better.

Thanks,

IMHO, this is probably the best way to do this:

Dump the crossover cable; buy yourself a firewall router, that can block
access to the internet on one or more pc(s) on a permanent or scheduled
basis.... These are quite cheap now!

Hello Jack,
The easiest and least expensive way to keep your children off of the
Internet is to go to "Control Panel" and open "Add or Remove Programs" then
click on "Add/Remove Windows Components" when the "Windows Components Wizard"
comes up...uncheck the box next to Internet Explorer and click next.
Note: You will most likely have to put your windows cd in the CD-ROM to
finish this process.
By doing it this way you will still be able to access your kids computer via
the network workgroup for file and folder sharing purposes.

I guess it all depends on how bright your kids are. If they are young and
have no ides how things work you could set Internet Explorer's proxy to
127.0.0.1.

I just tried something out here. A limited account can't enable or
disable the local area connection. So when you or your wife are done using
the computer, just right click your local area connection (in Network
connections) and disable it.
Likewise the next time you get on, just enable it again. To make it eaven
easier, right click it and "create shortcut". That'll put an icon on the
desktop that you can just click on and there's a "disable" button right on
it.

I understand your concerns Jack but you are starting to worry me. A
keylogger? That's like recording your kids telephone conversations. I
dont recommend it.

Unplug their PC from the LAN? I don't mean to be facetious, if only 'they'
use one PC then this would be the surest way.
After all, you have another PC for the internet.
