I am running Windows XP Professional SP2. In my main account, I am running
lots of programs, some of which came with my Hewlett Packard computer, and
some of which I added. I am running Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing, and
I think I am dropping frames because of all the unnecessary programs running
in the background.

Question: how can I set up a new account or profile in which I will run just
PP and not all the other stuff? I would prefer to avoid having to reinstall
PP, but I would do so if necessary. Related question: If I am in a particular
account or profile, and uninstall sofware via the Add/Remove Programs, does
it uninstall the programs for every user/profile, or just the one I am
currently loggin in under?

Hi,

It's not quite that easy. Let's answer your related question first:

It uninstalls it for everyone as it removes the core program files.

Basically, what you would need to do (and reinstalling it is not necessary)
is to eliminate the startup load for all accounts as many of the programs
loading at boot do so for all accounts. For those programs that you want to
have load in the other accounts, place a shortcut in their user profile
startup folder so that the program only loads for that user.

The programs I am running right now are fine for my 'general' account, which
is the only account I currently have. For my new Premiere Pro account, I
want to eliminate such things as Spy Sweeper, Norton Antivirus, Google
Desktop Search and a whole bunch of smaller programs that are not necessary
for PP use, and are bogging down my 3.6GHz system. How can I prevent these
unnecessary programs from running just in my PP configuration?
