We have three computers running Windows XP. On two of them the picture
chosen for the user shows up on the top of the start menu bar. On the
third it does not although it does show up when you go directly to user
information. Amy ideas?

You cannot have a picture on your Start Menu if you use the Classic Start
Menu.

Switch to the XP Start Menu.

*And* you cannot have a picture if you have the Welcome Screen turned off.
The Start Menu and Welcome Screen use the same picture.

To turn the Welcome screen on...
Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
Select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
Click the Apply Options button

Does this folder exist?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures\Default Pictures

Does this registry entry exist? And is NoUserNameInStartMenu set to 1?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
NoUserNameInStartMenu

Change NoUserNameInStartMenu to 0.

This registry key does exist. However I don't see an entry for
NoUserNameInStartMenu . Where should that be?

Normally if NoUserNameInStartMenu does not exist, it is the same thing as if
it were set to 0. Meaning that the policy is NOT in effect.

But you need to see if NoUserNameInStartMenu is listed under this registry
key also...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

If NoUserNameInStartMenu exists in that key, double click
NoUserNameInStartMenu, set the Value Data to 0, click OK, close the Registry
Editor and reboot.

You can also create a NoUserNameInStartMenu value and set it 0, if you want.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look in the right hand pane for a value called Disablemsconfig. If the
value exists, double click on Disablemsconfig and set the value to 0. If it
doesn't exist, right click in the right pane and point to New and click
DWORD value. Name it Disablemsconfig and leave it set at 0.

You can do the same thing in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Start | Run | Type: Regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Value Name: NoUserNameInStartMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = display username and picture
1 = hide username and picture

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called
NoUserNameInStartMenu and edit the value according to the settings above.
Close the Registry Editor, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for
the change to take effect.

If XP Pro, you can use Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |
Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\
Start Menu and Taskbar\
Remove user name from Start Menu

Set Remove user name from Start Menu to Not Configured or Disabled.

Hello Wesley,

My name is Eden Richardson and I'm having a similar, yet different problem.
When I upgraded my computer from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Home Edition, a
default picture was assigned to all the users (4 users plus the guest
account).

I'm the system administrator and would like to change my user account
picture. When I go the my account and click on 'change my picture' a 'Pick a
new picture for your account' window comes up. But, before I can do anything
in the window a error message comes up on the screen saying 'object required'
and the default pictures are not displayed in the box.

Other users on this computer have tried to change their user accounts with
no success either.

The Default Pictures folder exist in my Local Drive 'C' as you mentioned it
should.

Do you know what could be causing this problem?

Please help as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance,

Eden Richardson
