User account not recognized

I am set up with Windows XP Home Edition and I am the only administrator for
accounts. When I try to go to the User Accounts to make changes I get an
error message stating that my user account is not recognized and to restart
the computer and go to user accounts, but this doesn't change anything. Is
there a fix for this without reinstalling windows? Also, if I have to
reinstall windows will this screw up current settings and views? Thanks.

The link only gives basic info about setting up and using accounts. That is
not the problem. I've been the administrator for several years on my home
account. The login works fine, but when I go to the User Groups icon in the
control panel it says that it the account is not recognized so I can't get
into the accounts to make changes or set up new ones. Is there a fix for
this, or is this a common problem?

Were you successful in finding a fix?

I have only just today had this same problem occur. The Windows XP welcome screen opens just fine on reboot. I am the only user with admin privileges, all other users are limited. I can access the user accounts from all other "limited users" with no problem; but i get the "user account not recognized" when I attempt to access the user accounts from my (administrator) account.

Did you have to reinstall windows?
Did you then have to reinstall all the other programs?

Any tips are appreciated.
