used computer, no network, slow "preparing network settings"

Hello,
Recvd an IBM thinkpad with 450 mhz processor, 128 RAM, and Win2K. No
longer on a network, but the startup takes forwever and says that it is
"preparing network settings". I disable the LAN, and went into the
properties and unchecked the settings that were applied.
Unfortunately, it is still very slow - approx 5 min. Is there any way
to completely remove the installed network so that the startup goes
faster?
Thanks,
L

If the computer is not connected to a network at all, disable the network
adapter in Device Manager for faster start-up.

I already did disable it, but still same problem.
Now I have a different one: over the past few days, I decided to hook
it up to a wireless network that I am basing out of my home desktop
that runs off of XP. When I try to set up a network on the laptop
(win2000), it won't accept the XP disk, or a network setup disk that I
created. It says that I need to look in the help files for advice on
configuring it to work. However, I can't find anything, and I'm unsure
of what to do.
Thanks,
L
