preparing network connections..stuck

Hi, I have a 2000 server and it has been stuck on preparing network
connections for over 90 minutes. I tried rebooting and it still does not get
past. I tried safe mode w/o networking, but there I can see no network
config. If I do with networking, it hangs again with the same message. It
is single processor.

Any suggestions?

Is the server multihomed?

No, It has only the one card.

Disable/remove NIC, boot, uninstall phantom NIC, if any, and reinstall NIC.
Maybe, you would need to uninstall the network components as well.

How is the nic setup?
Do you have DNS and DHCP installed and configured?
