Use XP Pro upgrade on a Vista Home machine ?

New PC bought with Vista pre-installed. I own an unused XP
Professional Upgrade CD.

Can I upgrade / crossgrade / downgrade from Vista to XP Pro using the
upgrade CD ?

I'm anticipating failure when it doesn't detect a previous complying
product - is this so, and if so what media and licensing steps offer a
workaround ?

Thanks,

Phil

There is no workaround and no end-user right to change from Vista to XP.
You need to contact the source you bought the computer from and either have
them supply Windows XP for it or replace it with a Windows XP system.

Vista considers XP to be a downgrade, as it is an older OS, and won't do it.

If you manage to get a '98 and upgrade from there, first check out your
computer's manufacturer
website to see if XP drivers are available for the Hardware installed in
it(Mobo, etc)

apart from Vista Business and its downgrade rights, so could I use a
Vista business upgrade followed by the downgrade rights to XP ?
