Upgrading from XP to Vista

I currently have XP Pro and wish to upgrade to Vista Home Premium, but I
want to set up my system as a dual boot so I have both XP and Vista. I would
prefer to just buy the Vista upgrade instead of the full version (saving
over a $100), so I thought I would install another copy of XP on my system
and then upgrade the copy to Vista.

My concern is that the Vista upgrade will somehow invalidate my XP license
and I won't be able to run both operating systems. Does anyone know if this
will work or not? TIA

according to the EULA (Microsoft agreement that you must agree too if you
want to use windows) you are NOT allowed to do that.

If you get the upgrade then you must upgrade the copy of XP you have and not
use it....

You cannot do a dual boot using an upgrade version.

Well this is according to the EULA... is it technically possible to do this
without activation problems? I believe so.

Using the 'upgrade' assumes that you will not want XP. To dual boot, you
must have two full versions, one of each.

Windows XP Professional installation must upgrade to either Vista Business,
Enterprise or Ultimate because XP Professional shares their common core
operating structure. Features such as Domain Join for example and Group
Policy features are not available in the consumer/home versions of Vista
such as Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium.

It is assumed you will need these features if you are to upgrade to a future
Windows Business SKU. If you don't need the business features, the only
suggestion is to backup your data now in XP and do a clean install and
restore your data manually.

The installation process for Windows Vista is a total pain in the ass.
According to the chart, an upgrade to Vista Home Premium requires a clean
install. So I did that, now when I try to activate Vista, it says I can't
because an upgrade must see XP pro. One can't even put in the XP pro Disk
for Vista to validate.

This process is totally flawed and not consumer friendly.

I have the reverse problem.

My PC came pre-installed with Vista Business. I would like to upgrade to
XP Pro. Is there a disk I can buy to help me do this?

You might be able to buy XP at a local mom and pop computer store in your
area. I would try that.

You can purchase Windows XP Pro at most places that sell computers or
software.
However first make sure with the computer manufacturer all your
hardware ahs Windows XP support, some newer hardware does not.

If you recently purchased the computer, the easiest thing is to return
the computer and purchase one with Windows XP.
Dell, Toshiba and possibly other major OEMs as well as countless local
shops continue to sell computers with Windows XP.
