Upgrade question

I confess, I have one PC in my house that is running on a pirated
version of XP. The other two are legit. I want to upgrade this
pirated XP OS to Vista, legally. My question is, if I purchase an
"upgrade" version of Vista, will it properly recognize the XP OS and
perform the upgrade, or will it somehow detect that it was an
unlicenced copy, and leave me with a useless box and $100 down the
crapper?

Now what do you think? Do you think MS is that stupid to validate against
pirated copies of their OS? If you believe that, you should call your
primary physician and ask for another dose of drugs.

The Upgrade DVD's installation routine is certainly supposed to detect
the illicit copy and refuse to install. After all, this is what you
want, isn't? You did say "... I want to upgrade this pirated XP OS to
Vista, legally..." There are only two ways to do that:

1) Replace the pirated WinXP with a legitimate copy, and then upgrade
to Vista.

2) Purchase a full (*not* Upgrade) Vista license to replace the illicit
WinXP.

Hi,

You could try the method suggested by Rick Rogers or purchase the OEM
version (being your own system provider) instead of the upgrade version, if
you are not planning to move the install to another system in the future.

You could upgrade and replace components with the OEM version as many times
as you wish except to put the OS into another system.

Hope this helps and good luck.
