Use of a gamport joystick in a faster PC

I have been told in the MS Hardware newsgroup that it is not possible to use
my old gameport MS Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick on a faster machine as
"it loses the sweetspot when it comes to timing issues" so it would be
necessary for me to upgrade to a USB stick instead. However MS no longer
produce the stick (or any other for that matter).

I currently have an AMD K6-2 350MHz CPU (yes, I know!), but it does most of
the things I want from it - although a little slow with some of the graphic
intensive applications.

I am thinking of upgrading the entire system to a much faster PC. I have
seen an advert for an MSI motherboard (don't have the model number handy I'm
afraid) which allows you to buy an extra gameport that can be attached to
the board. This motherboard will allow me to run up to 3GHz with 2GB RAM so
is fairly up to date.

That leads me to the question - can I still use my old gameport joystick
(which I love - the main reason for not having upgraded yet) on the new
motherboard, or will it not work as has been implied in other newsgroups.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing.

I'm probably going to say what everyone else has said... give it up and
buy a USB joystick. I have the USB Sidewinder and it's a nice joystick,
you can get one on ebay.
