Hi,

My system configuration: PC-win xp pro, (2 year old)Dell
Inspiron 8000 notebook running win xp pro.

I have a new 30 gig 2.5" external hard drive that
run on usb2. The drive does not need external power- it
come with one cable that split into two usb plugs to draw
power from both usb port... if required...

On my PC the drive run well using one usb2 port. On my
notebook I have to use one end of the cable on the pcmcia-
USB2 port and the other end of the cable on the usb1 port
to get the necessary power.

I notice that even when I don't use the drive it's still
running.unlike using one of those smart media card.

My questions are:

1. If I only use the drive every hour or so how can
I quickly disable it ( so it totally stop running)...i
tried using the device manager but it won't shut it down
until i reboot....i know that I can always unplug/plug but
I would rather create some kind of link and disable/enable.

2. My pc have 2 hard drive, one for storing backup data
that I hardly used. How could I quickly stop it from
running then later turn it on..while I'm using the
computer?

3. The spec on the 2.5" external hard drive say:

VIBRATION
Operating
9.8m/s2{ 1.0G }
Non operating
49m/s2{ 5.0G }

SHOCK
Operating
2,207m/s2{ 225G }
Non operating
8,820m/s2{ 900G }

...what does this mean in practical term?...will this hard
drive survive in the car when it go over
A hump? Will this drive have any chance of survival from a
desk height drop?

thanks in advance for any reply

Don't worry about shock. If you don't understand G-force then what you read
means nothings. Just avoid very hard knocks, like dropping it on to a hard
surface. It will be fine in a car. Don't worry.

As for your USB connection... Are you connecting 2 different USB ports
together? Not a good idea. PCMCIA USB adapters don't give enough power. You
should have a PS2 connector for your caddy to plug in a different socket on
the caddy and the other into the mouse/keyboard socket.
